Margaret Garland Woodruff Luther
MARGARET
GARLAND WOODRUFF LUTHER, age 83, passed away Monday, December 15, 2003. She was
born on March 28, 1920 in Houston, Texas. After being widowed at age 35, Mrs.
Luther earned her Bachelor's degree and Master's Degree of Education from the
University of Houston. She began teaching Civics at Spring Branch High School in
1957. She took the position of Dean of Women at Memorial High School in 1963.
Later in her career she became a grade level principle until her retirement from
Memorial High School in 1985. After her retirement, Mrs. Luther had time to
spend gardening and took great pleasure in enjoying her beautiful yard, flowers
and feeding the birds. She also enjoyed traveling with her friends and family.
Many of her trips were with the Prime of Lifers from Terrace United Methodist
Church where she was a member since 1956. Margaret was a strong and independent
woman who deeply loved her family and friends. She was lovingly referred to as
Nanny by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years
her most treasured moments were spent enjoying her great grandchildren. They
have fond memories of playing in her backyard and being fed fresh blueberries.
Margaret is best remembered for her wisdom, kindness, caring and gentle nature
and will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. She was preceded in
death by her husband Doyle Sidney Luther, mother Mary Margaret Woodruff, father
Paul Whitten Woodruff, brother Paul William (Bill) Woodruff and daughter Mildred
Paulette Williams. She is survived by her daughter Martha Nell Nichols and
husband Jay, sister MaryAnn Leavens, sister-in-law Catherine Woodruff,
son-in-law Francis Jesse Williams, grandchildren Stacie Reed, Stephanie Husmann,
Travis Williams and Whitney Williams, nephew Wayne Woodruff, nieces Cathie
Kirsch and Linda Leavens, four great grandchildren and numerous other relatives
and friends. Visitation with th e family will be held on Thursday, December 18,
2003 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell
Rd. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2003,
Terrace United Methodist Church, 1203 Wirt Road, with Reverend Bill Jenkins
officiating. Interment will be at a later date at the Garden of Memories,
Kerrville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, for those desiring, memorial contributions
may be made in Margaret's memory to Terrace United Methodist Church or to the
Alzheimer's Association.
