May 26, 1929 – May 2, 2007

Beloved father, brother, grandfather and dedicated coach, Paul Register departed the playing field in the game of life on Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Paul was born May 26, 1929 to Charles and Floy Register in Palatka, Fla. Paul and his younger brother “Doc,” alone in the world at an early age, moved to Arkansas to live with their Aunt Hazel Goodman. Paul’s brother passed away several years later, leaving him and his aunt Hazel. Paul had a tremendous love for sports his entire life.

Paul graduated from Henderson State University where he attended on a football scholarship. After graduation, he and his wife Martha visited relatives in Houston and Paul “applied” for a job at Galveston Ball. He walked on to the playing fields and asked Coach Darrell Tulley directly for the job. His coaching career began the next day.

Paul went from Ball High to Spring Branch with Tulley and later became the head coach leading the Bears to many wins along the way. In 1970, Paul, Martha and sons, Kurt and Kean, moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where Coach took over as head coach of the LD Bell Raiders. In 1972, Paul got the call from newly hired A&M head Coach Emory Bellard to come with him to Bryan-College Station as head coach of the freshman team. Coach Cash, as he was known by all his friends and players, took over the defensive line a couple of years later when the freshman and varsity teams were combined. Coach Cash had a hand in many of the great things that happened in Aggie football over the next 20 years, including the number one defensive line in the nation, multiple SWC championships, and some of the greatest football players to ever step on to Kyle Field.

Paul cared more about the players and their lives than he ever cared about winning. Many of those players probably questioned that at the time, but the love and friendship they showed Paul and his family in the past year with the loss of his beloved wife Martha and throughout his fight the months following his surgery, proved otherwise.

Survivors include his sons, Kurt, Kean and wife, Vita; grandsons, Dustin Paul and Justin David; aunt, Hazel Goodman; in-laws, Ferrell and Joyce Sullivan and Jerry and Joyce Sullivan; and many dearly beloved nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 600 East 26th St., Bryan, Texas 77803.

“My Friend”
In grade-school I knew him only by name;
He wasn’t yet known by fortune and fame.
He was a year or two older than me;
No clue, as yet, what the future would be.

In High school I knew him well, yet afar;
The local athlete, the big football star.
He was well rounded and could do it all;
Whether hundred yard dash or basketball.

But he was known best on the football field;
As a fullback a mighty jolt he would wield.
At linebacker he played his spot so fine;
The runner would seldom get past the line.

After high school we went our separate ways,
To meet once again after army days.
In college our friendship grew like a tree;
But still no clue what the future would be.

It was just a few years on down the line;
Little sister he started to wine and dine.
Then it was only a very short while,
He and little sister waltzed down the aisle.

For the next fifty years, I never saw
A closer buddy and brother-in-law.
This relationship just came to an end;
I lost my best pal, my buddy, my friend.
