Give up?  It was art teacher Altharetta Yeargin's creation.  As Patsy Fox Andrews writes:

"I've always thought the crosshatching/blue idea was rather clever.  I just checked the annual and Altharetta Yeargin is credited with the design.  "Wow what a woman she is."  She was the first full time SBISD art teacher and then finally district supervisor. The school district now has The Altharetta Yeargin Museum housed in a fabulous new facility, open to the public, in what was formerly the automotive shop area at Westchester HS.  My mother is heavily involved and Bonnie Williford Meine is on the Board. The collection, appraised at about a million and a half, is primarily the collection of Altharetta and her husband Bob, accumulated as they traveled annually to the far corners of the World."
